Allepey or Allapuzha as it is locally known is a divine place. It a tourist paradise. Though, the best time to visit Allepey is between August to February and specially during the boat race, the picturesque during monsoon just elevates to a different level. It is a must experience for all nature lovers.
The human civilisation that is settled on both sides of the backwater is unique and one of its kind. Not only people dwell there, they do fishing and also use it as a common mode of commutation. The schools, churches , houses , coconut trees, the wind , the birds can help you destress and take you to a different calm and peaceful world.
What all you can see in Alleppey :
Well Boathouse is what we all know about and is very famous around. We happen to have seen many boathouses in Television, Movies and Newspaper. You can take an overnight stay at a boat house to enjoy the backwaters for one whole day or 24 hours. It is called backwaters because the water is actually from the river Vembanadu which flows and then later joins in the Ocean in Cochin or Kochi. Before it joins the ocean, since the water is fresh, the locals use it to water the paddy fields.
Allepey is also bird watcher's favourite destination. You can see a variety of birds and can even spot a kingfisher if you are lucky. We could spot Swans, Black Cormorant, White Ibis, Kites and also Kingfisher.
The long stretch of Paddy fields looks like the entire earth has been covered by bright green carpet.
If you are a seafood lover, then this is the best place to be. You can buy some expensive big scampis and prawns at almost half the price from the local market as you take the boat ride and ask your personal chef if hired a houseboat to cook some amazing dishes for you.
And the boat house you see below is a store which operates only on sunlight. Hence, it closes as soon as sun sets. You can get all kind of items you find in a kirana or grocery shop.
You can buy stuffs local to Kerala like papad, appam mix, idiapam mix etc from here.
You can visit the nearby churches. They are small because the place is small but are quiet spread out in number. The churches are beautiful and welcomes everybody.
You can go a relaxing spa or head massage or a detox treatment in one of their ayurveda centers.
You can enjoy a perfect sunset and sunrise right in the center of the backwaters.
So what are you thinking freinds, If you have still not visited this place, I think you should start thinking about it and plan to visit it once in your life time.
And yes, last but not the least , do try the famous meen fry (pomfret fish fry) . It spicy and delicious.
Plan your budget, book your tickets, pack your bags and head off to the beautiful place. By Soma Pradhan
